For "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" and "On Turning Ten," read both poems and annotate (mark up) your printed copies. Circle any unknown words (like counterpane!). Determine the rhyme scheme. What is a stanza? What is a refrain? Using any previous knowledge, label figurative language (simile, metaphor, alliteration, hyperbole, repetition, etc.) that you can identify. What can you tell about the speaker and point of view in each poem? Which of the two poems do you identify with more? Which poem do you like better and why? In your annotations, also write any thoughts or observations.
The copy below of "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" includes a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat. How would you illustrate "On Turning Ten"?
Challenge question: How is writing (specifically, sentence structure) used to reflect actual speech patterns and help the reader hear the speaker's voice (as well as convey tone) in either poem? Look for specific examples.
